I became the photo editor of The Red & Black in May 2020. What a time to step into that role.
Learning was truly trial by fire, as I was teargassed during my first week in this new position while covering Black Lives Matter protests in Georgia. Needless to say, I quickly learned how to stay safe in unpredictable breaking news situations. Most importantly, I learned how to lead a team of talented visual storytellers through an unknown time and retain the trust of those we covered during the next emotional weeks as protests continued. The rest of the year brought continued protests, a presidential election, a Senate runoff, COVID vaccine rollout and much more that I had the honor to document.
My memory cards carry within them a lot of emotions, and some of these images may be difficult to view. As a content warning, there are depictions of police violence in the following images.
